Position:   School Media Specialist/Librarian (Grades 3-8) - (full-time / tenure-track )

Eligible Candidates must hold the following certifications:

  • New Jersey Educational Media Specialist certificate

Qualifications:

  • Ability to engage students in learning and maintain a positive learning environment.
  • Operates and supervises the media center; maintains a comprehensive and efficient system for cataloging and lending all media center materials to assist students and teachers. 
  • Evaluates, selects and requisitions appropriate books, aids and other supplies and equipment and maintains inventory records.
  • Develops and implements instructional lessons for students in grades 3-8
  • Coordinates with administrators and other teaching staff members to assist in the selection of books and other instructional materials; keeps students and teaching staff informed regarding new acquisitions for use in the media center.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with staff to support instruction in other content areas.
  • Serves as a resource to students to provide research assistance.
  • Ensures that student conduct conforms to the school's standards and school district policies, and establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the media center.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of child growth and development, effective instructional strategies, learning assessments and research related to learning.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Middlesex College Library

Closter Public Schools

Tenakill Middle School is a 5 - 8 grade middle school in northern Bergen County. Closter School District is a two-school, high-performing district. The middle school currently has 594 students. It is a diverse district with an active PTO, involved parents and a generous budget for the library. The librarian's schedule is fixed. Class sizes for the library have been under 20 students and the curriculum focuses on digital media skills. The library space is beautiful. The faculty are collegial and pleasant to work with. The school has a new principal who is bringing fresh energy to the culture.

JOB GOALS:

  5. To provide all students with an enriched media environment containing a wide variety and range of resources to invite intellectual growth, and aid students and teachers in acquiring skills needed to take full advantage of media resources.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
The following responsibilities are expected to be performed under the direction of and in collaboration with the administration:
  1. Is responsible for the operation and supervision of the school media center(s).
  2. Maintains a comprehensive and efficient system for cataloging all media center materials and instructs teachers and students about use of the system.
  3. Assists teachers in the selection of print, non-print and electronic resources and makes media center materials available to supplement the instructional program.
  4. Evaluates, selects and requisitions new media center materials and informs teachers and other staff of new acquisitions.
  5. Provides a sequential program of library skills instruction to develop skills in the use of reference material in relation to planned assignments
  6. Conducts professional development for teachers in the effective evaluation, selection and use of media.
  7. Prepares the Media Center proposed budget.
  8. Plans and supervises purposeful assignments for media aides/technicians
  9. Maintains professional library materials for teacher use.
  10. Performs such other related duties as may be assigned.
  • TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
    Ten month position.
    Salary and work year to be determined by the board of education and negotiated contract.
