Morristown-Beard Assistant Librarian

About Morristown-Beard School

Morristown-Beard School is an independent, coeducational day school serving students from more than 85 communities and nine counties in northern New Jersey. There are 590 students in grades 6-12, with an Upper School enrollment of 435 and a Middle School of 155. Unwavering in its 125-year commitment to developing each student’s individual strengths, MBS is unique in its history and mission. Our outstanding, highly professional faculty are deeply invested in guiding students to reach their potential in the context of a life of balance and authentic learning and by harmonizing academic rigor with moral and ethical development. With small class sizes and individualized instruction, we have the ability to connect personally and intellectually with each MBS student in an intimate and inspiring academic setting. We believe that an education for the 21st century is an education in interdependent cultures, ethnicities, genders, economies, and religions. Our students are encouraged to recognize that we live in a world of inherent diversity, and to imaginatively reflect on what it means to act responsibly in and upon such a world. Drawing inspiration from the freedom and values of the School’s curricular philosophy, faculty, and students come together inside and outside of the classroom to create an inclusive community.

MBS Assistant Librarian

The MBS library is a widely-used resource for teachers and students. It is a place to nurture lifelong learning and emphasize the importance of reading, both for pleasure and for information. With regularly scheduled classes that focus on research and critical thinking, the library is a center for learning that is vital to student achievement.

The primary responsibilities of the assistant librarian are to support the work of the librarian and to collaborate with teachers in support of curriculum initiatives and student programming. And, of course, to foster a love of reading.

The ideal candidate will be able to maintain the library as a space for study and research, bring up-to-date and visionary thinking about libraries and understand current technologies and methodologies to support school libraries. This person will update the Libguide to reflect most current offerings of library, physical and digital and assist in strengthening the middle school program by supporting and collaborating with middle school teachers on research projects and be able to identify examples of literature and other resources across a variety of disciplines. The candidate will assist with collection development, staying abreast of current fiction and non- iction as well as contributing to the conversation about online resources. They will also possess organizational skills to perform cataloging, shelving, and summer reading tasks.

In absence of head librarian, the candidate will assist with student research and reading, teach classes and assume any responsibilities needed to keep the library running smoothly, as well as other duties as assigned.

Education and experience:
MLIS/MLS/MI, completed or in progress, from ALA-accredited school, experience working with students preferred.
