The New Jersey Association of School Librarians advocates high standards for librarianship and library media programs in the public, private and parochial schools in New Jersey to ensure that students and staff become effective users of information. The Association fosters excellence in the school library media program by providing school librarians/media specialists with educational opportunities and current information through mentoring, online and print publications, workshops, and conferences.
   

COMMITTEES

AASL Affiliate Assembly
Serves as a liaison and official NJASL representative to the AASL Affiliate Assembly for educational purposes.

AECT Liaison
Serves as a liaison and official NJASL

representative to the Association for Educational Communications and Technology for educational purposes.

Archives 
Responsible for keeping all records that pertain to the history of the Corporation, all official books and records and a file of programs, newspaper clippings and publications of the Corporation.

Authors/Illustrators

Responsible for producing a list of authors and illustrators who live in the eastern region and making this list available.

Bylaws Review Committee

Will, in consultation with the President, will annually review the Bylaws of the New Jersey Association of School Librarians and make recommendations for amendments to the Board.

Conference

Plans and organizes the annual Conference of NJASL.

County Liaison

Assists in the development of local associations, promotes membership in the state organizations, informs local associations on a regular basis regarding NJASL actions, assists local associations in planning programs and workshops and forwards county news to the Newsletter editor.

Elections

Prepares ballots for mailing or posting online to the NJASL web site. Counts returns and receives final count from the Webmaster. Notifies candidates.

Finance

Annually reviews the operating budget for the purpose of making investment recommendations to the Board. Reviews investments and investment strategies.

Hospitality

Makes arrangements for hospitality at Board of Trustees meetings.

Intellectual Freedom
Serves as a liaison between the Corporation and the Intellectual Freedom Committees of other groups(e.g. NJLA, ALA, etc.) Advises the Corporation on matters before such groups and prepares materials that will advise media personnel of available services and support in matters concerning intellectual freedom.

Legislative

Keeps members informed about relevant state and national judicial and regulatory legislation within the limits imposed on 501(c)3 organizations.

ListServ

Responsible for maintaining a listserv for the general membership and a listserv for the Board of Trustees.

Membership

Promotes membership in the Corporation. Keeps the official list of all members and maintains a membership database. Send out membership dues notices and acknowledgements to members each year.

NJASLR

Promotes continued membership among retired professionals, assists in planning workshops/programs and may provide representation at official functions.

New Jersey Library Network

Attends meeting of the Library Network Review Board and other related committee meetings. Reports to the Board on matters of interest and value to educational media specialist. Includes members from each of the four regions. Maintains contact with State Library and each of the four regions.

New Member Orientation

Coordinates with the Membership Committee and the State Department of Education and the County to provide orientation and mentoring programs for new library media specialists.

Newsletter
Prepares a monthly publication for the Corporations to include meeting notices, timely data for members, communications from the Board,bylaw changes, election reports, etc.

Nominations

Provides nominations of two active members for each office of VP, Recording Secretary, Corresponding Secretary, Treasurer and for each Member-at-Large to be elected. Also nominates an AASL Affiliate Assembly representative.

Professional Development

Proposes, initiates and implements programs designed to increase the capacity of NJASL members.

Professional Outreach
Establishes and maintains contact with New Jersey Principals and Supervisors Association, the School Boards Association, Parent Teacher Associations and other educational groups.

Professional Resources

Serves as a Help Desk for members of NJASL answering questions and providing assistance with immediate hands-on needs.

Publications

Maintains for circulation and distribution all publications generated by other committees.

Publicity

Prepares and sends news releases about elections, conferences, projects and other events to newspapers and journals.

Scholarships and Awards

Oversees the selection of recipients for awards and scholarships and initiates communications with other organizations and companies to arrange for additional awards.

Standards

Maintains communications with the Information Power II Implementation committee of AASL. It will promote and provide training for the implementation of the Information Literacy Standards for Student Learning and the integration of these nationals standards with state and local curriculum standards.

Technology Applications

Informs members regarding the latest in technology developments with emphasis on education and media center administration.

Urban Libraries

Investigates problems unique to urban schools. Develops programs to assist urban school library media specialists.

Web site

Maintains the NJASL web page. Posts publications, the Board of Trustees minutes and all other information deemed appropriates by the Board on the Organization's web site.

LIAISONS

Charter/Independent Schools

Liaison will establish connections between NJASL and library media specialists employed in Charter, Private and Independent Schools.

New Jersey Reads

Provides information about NJ Reads and its programs to NJASL.

New Jersey Education Association

Provides information about NEA and its programs and serves as an advocate of NJASL to NJEA. Also works to provide NJASL programs and joint NJASL/NJEA programs for NJEA conferences/workshops.

New Jersey Library Association (NJLA)

Provides information about NJLA and its programs and suggests ways in which NJLA and NJASL can collaborate. Also works to provide NJASL and joint programs at NJLA and NJASL conferences.

New Jersey Reading Association (NJRA)
Provides information about NJRA and its programs.
State Department of Education
Serves as a source of information about the State Department of Education and as an advocate of school libraries and school librarians in the State Department of Education.

Vendor
Works with vendors to develop exhibit policies and procedures for NJASL in preparation for workshops, programs and the annual conference.
